Schlossberg Achkarren

The Achkarrer Schlossberg is notable for inclines of up to 80% and regularly reaches peak temperatures. Its vistas look out onto Alsace and the Vosges mountains. The remains of the walls on the Schlossberg's summit date back to the thirteenth century. In 1819, the upper portion of the Schlossberg was terraformed using targeted explosions to carve out vineyards among the cliffs. The weathered volcanic soil preserves the warmth that collects during the day in the basin-shaped vineyard and reflects it back to the grapes overnight.
